February 28: The Best Defense

Matthew 5:38-48

Matthew 5:38-48

Love Your Enemies

(Leviticus 24:17-23Luke 6:27-36)

38Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 39But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. 41And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. 42Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

43Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44But I (Note: Jesus) say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you45That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust46For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? 47And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? 48Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Note: In verse 48 above, it sounds like we are commanded to be perfect.  We are expected to be perfect: "Be ye therefore perfect".  I have said many times, and have heard others say many times, "I am not perfect" when we make mistakes, or when we mess up.  I am now believing it is the wrong thing to say because of this verse.  Maybe we should acknowledge the wrong and the mistake, and invite Jesus into it.  Repent and give it to Him.  Ask Him to take it away and rest from it in Him.  Ask for and receive grace to be delivered and to be healed.  At the end of the day, it seems like the expected destination of our journey is becoming like God our Father, hallelujah!!! It is a process.  The end of the verse said "even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect".  In this process, growth takes place, transformation occurs, healing and deliverance takes place, relationship with Elohim: God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit builds up, and so on and so forth.

Matthew 5:39

But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Pastor Andrew Wommack teaches on "The Best Defense"

Would you rather have God defend you or defend yourself? That’s the choice Jesus offers here. “Turning the other cheek” is not a prescription for abuse but rather the way to get the Lord involved in your defense.  (Note: Amen!!!)

Many people believe these instructions of Jesus guarantee that others will take advantage of them. That would be true if there was no God! However, when we follow His commands, we know He is on our side. He said in Romans 12:19, “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”. (Note: Thank You Jesus)

When we fight back, we are drawing on our own strength; but when we turn the other cheek, we are invoking God as our defense. Once we understand this, it becomes obvious that these instructions are for our own good.

James 1:20 says that the wrath of man does not accomplish the righteousness of God. Regardless of how appropriate our anger may seem or how much we think our wrath could make a person or situation change, we will never achieve God’s best that way.

When you defend yourself, you stop God from defending you. When you turn the other cheek to your enemies, you are releasing the power of God on your behalf. Let God defend you today.

Note: Praise the Lord!  Such powerful teaching.  I just love it!
